Open space and privacy may seem like strange bedfellows. The architectural challenge was to maximise the feeling of space both inside and out, within the confines of the existing building’s envelope. Two modern townhouses carved into the footprint of a former factory.
Working in a particularly challenging Conservation Area, our approach was to carve into the existing structure, hollowing out light wells and cut outs within the historic mass to bring light into a relatively deep plan whilst creating a series of projected, private and intimate external spaces which the houses are designed around.
